While education sector remains the key economic driver for human capital development, the Sector is going through a period of significant change that brings both challenges and opportunities. Furthermore, despite enhanced delivery in education recent years, it is also clear that there are several areas that requires Funding to be strengthened.

The Maritime Education and Training Fund (METFUND) is established by the Merchant Shipping Act No. 21 of 2003.The METFUND’s functions and responsibilities are governed by the Merchant Shipping (Maritime Education and Training Fund) Regulations,2011, as published in the Government Notice No. 184 of 18/05/2012. The fund is under Ministry responsible for Works and Transport.

METFUND as a player in the higher education system is pleased to strategize itself in transformation for sustainability. To be able to get there, we are making choices through our strategic plan that is driven by the vision’ To become a sustainable and revolving Maritime Education and Training Fund and a mission ‘To effectively and efficiently manage loans and grants for eligible Maritime Students and Institutions. In becoming sustainable revolving fund METFUND cater for increasing demands of needy Tanzanian students to finance their post-secondary education required for them to join the vibrant labour market in Maritime Sector. The Board of Trustees’ priorities for the next five years (2021/22 – 2025/26) are; optimizing Revenue collection, lending and loan collection through Online Fund Management System (OFMS), business re-engineering, automation and strategic partnering with stakeholders.
